Ceramic tile is one of the most beautiful flooring options available. Unfortunately, it can also be one of the most difficult to clean. Some ceramic tile is easily scratched, and some collects a great deal of dust and debris in the crevices.
But cleaning ceramic tile doesn’t have to be a challenge! Staying on top of the day-to-day maintenance always helps. So do these tips:
- Sweep the floor often, and never use a vacuum — this can lead to scratches.
- Avoid using abrasive chemicals, no matter how tempting! Soap and water, or the mildest detergent, should be all you ever use.
- Remember to clean up the water after you mop. Drying the floor will prevent water spots from forming unsightly residue.
- Caulk between your tiles after grouting. This will prevent water from seeping in and keep the tiles looking beautiful.
- Consider sealing your floor on a regular basis to prevent stains and discoloration.
- Clean up spills immediately, before they have a chance to seep in underneath your tile.
- Protect your investment by placing cloth footers under all furniture that will be in contact with tile. This will prevent chips, scratches, and cracks.
Ceramic tile is beautiful and durable, but it does require basic care to continue looking that way. Remember that though the time is durable under normal use, subjecting it to stress, such as moving heavy furniture across it, can shatter or crack the tiles. Always be careful when doing anything that is not a day-to-day activity!
Finally, no matter how well you maintain your ceramic tile, there will come a time when the grouting becomes old and worn. You will need to thoroughly clean the tile with a rag and mild detergent when this happens. You might have to get on your knees and go around each individual tile, which can be a trying job — but it is worthwhile when you see the ceramic tile glisten and gleam with its natural beauty.
