How To Remove Wax from Carpet

by on November 5, 2010

For people who love to burn candles, there is a fairly good potential that melted wax will eventually get dripped or spilled on the carpet at some point.  Wax in the carpet looks like a permanent mess that you will have to hide with furniture.  However, there is a way to get the spilled wax out of the carpet with the use of a warm iron.

Remove Wax From Carpet

1. Scrape out as much or the wax as possible.

2. Place a sheet of greaseproof paper, with the shiny side up, or a piece of a brown paper bag on top of the spilled wax.  Butcher paper is a great example of greaseproof paper.  It can be found online, at some food supply stores, and some art supply stores.  Since you will only need a small amount of butcher paper for this purpose, you may inquire at the meat department of your local grocery store if you could purchase a couple of pieces of butcher paper from them.  If you are unable to locate any butcher paper, simply purchase some brown paper lunch sacks.

3. Press the tip of a warm clothes iron gently over the area where the wax is spilled until the wax melts.  As the wax melts it will adhere to the paper that is between the iron and the wax.  Use extreme care to not allow the iron to make direct contact with the carpet fibers, as it may leave scorch marks.

4. Lift the paper, with the adhered wax, up off of the carpet.

5. If there is dye from the candle wax left in the carpet, blot the stain with a small amount of denatured alcohol on a clean white cloth.  Denatured alcohol is a solvent that can be purchased from any hardware store, and is capable of  dissolving most inks, crayons, and lipsticks.

6. Sponge the spot with water.

You have done the seemingly impossible, you have removed the wax stain from your carpet.  You will not have to hide the spot under an area rug or a piece of furniture, because the spot is gone!
