Curtains need to be cleaned fairly regularly because they collect dust and dirt. By following this set of instructions, you can ensure that your curtains are always looking their best and are free of allergy-causing dust:
1. Take the curtains down and examine the backside of the fabric (the part that face the window) for signs of sun-rot. Do this by stretching the fabric and feeling it. If the fabric of the curtains is damaged by sun-rot, don’t bother trying to clean them. Just throw the damaged curtains away and purchase new ones.
2. Unlined curtains should be washed according to the instructions provided on the label. Generally, unlined curtains can be machine washed.
3. Lined curtains will need to be professionally dry cleaned. If you try to machine wash these, they will get ruined.
4. Hand wash very large unlined curtains in the bath tub to avoid damaging your washing machine, by getting the fabric tangled in the machine.
5. If you have metal curtain rings that have rusted, boil them in in vinegar. This will remove any rust and allow the metal to shine once again. If you have old curtain rods that don’s allow the curtain rings to slide smoothly, simply rub wax paper or bar soap on them, and the rings will once again glide smoothly across the rods. This will allow you to open and close your curtains with much less effort.
6. For curtains that just have a little dust, toss them into a tumble dryer. Throw in a sheet of fabric softener and set the dryer on an air-dry setting. In just half an hour, when the curtains come out, they will be dust-free and have a fresh, clean fragrance.
Now that you know how to clean your curtains, there is no reason to have dirty and dusty curtains hanging up in your home.
